Little Shift #4 (Holiday Edition): Prioritize Joy In Your Work

As coaches, consultants, and leaders, we often focus so intently on helping others that we forget one of the simplest truths: we cannot help others effectively unless we are helping ourselves first. Energy, focus, and presence aren’t limitless. They need to be nurtured.

Prioritizing joy isn’t indulgent; it’s essential. When we carve out even small moments that genuinely light us up—a walk in crisp air, a quiet cup of tea, a chat with a friend, or even just putting on fuzzy slippers—we refill our own cup. These moments aren’t distractions; they are the foundation that allows us to show up refreshed, clear-minded, and fully present for our clients.

Joy reminds us who we are outside of our roles and responsibilities, and it sets the tone for the energy we bring into every session, meeting, and interaction. When we intentionally create space for happiness, curiosity, and play, we are more creative, more patient, and more capable of guiding others toward meaningful results.

In short: helping yourself is helping your clients. Every intentional moment of joy becomes fuel for your work. Notice it, schedule it, and protect it. Because the best work you do comes from a place of fullness, not depletion.

3 Ways to Prioritize Joy

1. Schedule Joy Like You Schedule Meetings
Block 15–30 minutes in your calendar each day for something that lights you up. Treat it as non-negotiable. These small, consistent moments can make a big difference in energy and focus.

2. Create a “Pre-Session Ritual”
Before client calls or meetings, do one thing that centers and refreshes you. This could be a few deep breaths, a quick walk, or even sipping your favorite tea or coffee mindfully. Showing up grounded sets the tone for meaningful interactions.

3. Notice and Celebrate Micro-Moments
Joy doesn’t always have to be planned. Pay attention to small wins, funny moments, or personal victories throughout your day. Acknowledging these moments—even in the middle of work—helps maintain energy, clarity, and presence.
